Abstract: This presentation covers the development of grid control centers from the days of the first digital SCADA systems in the 1960s that operated the generation and transmission system. The more powerful computers in the 1970s enabled the on-line network applications like state estimators, contingency analysis and optimal power flow for energy management systems (EMS). The development of the operator training simulator (OTS) also occurred in the same time frame. These digital technologies have now spread to the distribution management systems (DMS) which has helped in incorporating increasing distributed renewable generation and storage.

Event is co-hosted by: the University of Manchester IEEE PES Student Branch Chapter & the University of Manchester Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
