Event description

Description

Note: There are two events sharing the same date and theme, but programmes & venues differ slightly. Afternoon event is 12-4pm and evening event is 5.30-8pm.

Key features:

  • Meet and forge new friendships with like-minded individuals in an accessible, relaxed setting.
  • Edit & create new Wikipedia entries to raise the profile of under-represented groups within STEM subjects and disciplines.
  • Experience first-hand, learning activities that you can use within your own teaching.

Background: The contributions of women as well as other under-represented groups to advancements in STEM are many and continue to grow. Unfortunately, too many remain forgotten, uncredited or lack proper prominance online. This event seeks to change this by addressing the imbalance on Wikipedia.

Programme: We will begin with an introduction from passionate advocates. Participants will then be supported to edit Wikipedia entries as well as exploring the ethics of Wiki-editing. Following this, participants will collaborate in groups to review then edit existing Wikipedia entries and create new entries where appropriate. More details will be provided following registration.

Equipment: You are recommended to bring a fully-charged laptop, a charger and some relevant source material - contribute to the list at: http://exa.im/diversitylinks . Exa.foundation is happy to loan equipment for the event through prior arrangement with the event organiser (please note that 48 hours' notice is required).

Venue / Refreshments: This event takes place in the Viewing Room, on floor 2 of the Wellcome Collection. Food and drink is not permitted in the room, but there is an excellent ground floor cafe as well as a restaurant on floor 2.

Children: Some schools may be on half-term during this week, so we will plan to accommodate children of adult participants. While this event is not intended for unaccompanied children aged 14 and under, we will try to ensure that there are ample activities to keep children welcome and entertained. Please book tickets for any children you intend to bring with you.

PROGRAMME

12.00pm Welcome: "Why do we even need a #Wikithon?"

  • Try not to miss this. We'll have some powerful, thought-provoking presentations at the beginning which underline why #Wikithons are so important.

12.45pm Tutorial: "When and how does one change a Wikipedia entry"

  • There's a lot more to editing Wikipedia entries than simply changing the text. We'll guide you through as well as understanding the ethical issues.

1.30pm #Wikithon: "Let's get editing"

  • Identify and review entries in need of editing
  • Edit Wikipedia entries
  • Sharing solutions

4.00pm Close: Leave earlier or stay later if you choose.

Staying Later? You might head to the 'Wellcome Kitchen' a few seconds away for a sit-down meal with friends, the 'Wellcome Cafe' on the ground floor, or to Euston Station and environs for a quick-byte. There is also the excellent 'Wellcome Shop' with lots of STEM books, accessories and gifts on sale.
