Description

#exabits TeachComputing: KS3 Programming, East Sussex 19Sep17

Link: http://exa.foundation/events

Host: Alan O'Donohoe, exa.foundation

OBJECTIVES:

  • Effectively teach children in KS3 Computational Thinking, Algorithms and Programming (Python)
  • Differentiate your teaching so that all students can make rapid learning progress
  • Accurately assess learning progress
  • Use strategies including Pair Programming

Aims: This event is specifically designed to support teachers who are making the transition to teaching Computing in Key Stage 3, however it may also be relevant to teachers in Key Stage 2 and GCSE Computer Science as the Pedagogy (the Teaching & Learning strategies) is transferable to learners of all ages, even if the knowledge, skills and concepts aren't.

It's recommended for teachers with little or no experience of using Python. The course won't teach teachers Python, instead it will provide teachers with the necessary strategies to enable them to survive programming in Key Stage 3.

The event will provide teachers with an impactful practical experience as well as resources that demonstrate a range of teaching & learning strategies they can use in their own Computing lessons in Key Stage 3.

Some students really struggle to make rapid progress with the programming aspects of Computing, especially text-based programming. This event is intended to support teachers with the teaching of pupils who find problem solving, and text-based programming difficult as well as differentiation teaching to support a wide ability range.

The late start is to allow for travel in the morning. Delegates will need to make their own arrangements for lunch, there is a Co-op supermarket just outside the school entrance.
