Event description

Description

The historic ship plan and survey report collection of Lloyd’s Register is estimated to exceed 1.25 million documents. To get a feel for what is there we launch with a look at some first and famous ships – those of significant design, technological advance and historic importance, or just ones that everyone has heard of!

A product of ship classification, the archives were created during the survey of ships from 1834 to the late 1960s. This unique collection has been little utilised until now, and the Heritage & Education Centre team are working hard to make it more accessible. The numerous boxes also contain correspondence, notes and copy certificates. Aptly named ‘Project Undaunted’ the venture’s title comes from the first ship in the London port box to be surveyed. We are always excited to see what we will discover next.
