Description

Exclusive British Museum

Friday 12 January 6:30 - 8:30pm

Monday 15 January 2:00 - 4:00pm

Take a tour through the history of Britain and the world at the British Museum. We are lucky to have one of the best museums in the world in our midst but, let's be honest, when did you last visit it? Our tour will cover some of the "must see" highlights of the British Museum such as the Rosetta Stone, the key to unlocking hieroglyphs, and the Parthenon Sculptures (also known as the Elgin Marbles), considered some of the most beautiful achievements of Greek art. We will then visit ancient Rome at the start of the Empire to see masterpieces of Roman art, including one of the "raciest" items in the Museum collection (previously deemed pornographic!). We will also explore less well known civilizations, such as the Assyrians, through the monumental sculpture and beautiful palace reliefs they left behind. Lastly we will take a whirlwind tour through British history, from Roman silver tableware, via Anglo Saxon burial objects to the Norse influence on the medieval world as seen in the Lewis Chessmen, inspiration to JK Rowling!

Our tour will be led by Caroline Piper. Caroline is a London Blue Badge Tourist Guide, the highest tourist guiding qualification available and a Cambridge University history graduate. You can find out more about Caroline on her Piper Tours website http://pipertours.com/. Caroline led a London on Film Walking tour for the Society in April 2017 which everyone very much enjoyed.

We are planning two tours - one in the evening of Friday 12th January, and the other in the afternoon on Monday 15th, to give those of you who work full-time the opportunity to participate.

Each tour is restricted to 20 participants so is available to Members only. Cost is £10.
