About the film:
Hot from closing Glasgow Film Festival 2025 and shot in the run-up to Euro 2024, Make It To Munich follows Ethan Walker, a promising teenage footballer from Aberdeenshire who, just months into a football scholarship at a USA University, suffers life-threatening injuries (including multiple fractures, two brain haemorrhages and the complete dislocation of his right knee) in a road traffic accident. Aided in his recovery by pioneering Glasgow surgeon (and former Rangers footballer who was signed by Graeme Souness and worked with Ally McCoist) Professor Gordon Mackay, Ethan decides to cycle from Hampden to Munich for Scotland’s opening match against Germany in Euro 2024 -just nine months after his accident.
MAKE IT TO MUNICH is an incredible true story of the hope and comradery inspired by the love for the game, and the courage it takes to believe that, even against all the odds, anything is possible.
“Make it to Munich” is a belter of a crowd pleaser to conclude this year’s Glasgow Film Festival. A happy-go-lucky blend of sports footage and life-affirming meditations, it’s a funny, wholehearted picture that champions willpower and positivity even when the odds are against you. - in their own league
There’s a moment in Make it to Munich which floods you with happy-sadness, that feeling when you want to smile and cry at the same time, when the goodness in the world is so rich and full it catches you in the throat. - The Herald
About our Q&A guests:
Martyn Robertson (second from left), director
is a BAFTA new talent winning and BIFA nominated Director and Producer based in Glasgow, Scotland. His recent feature film Ride the Wave played at 26 film festivals worldwide, premiering at The BFI London Film Festival and we showed it at Skye Community Cinema too.
A single Mum of two grown up sons, she loves sea swimming, beach cleaning and exploring in her van Summer. She does a headstand a day and is learning to skateboard.
Make it to Munich was both a physical and professional challenge for Martyn as a filmmaker and one that allowed him to combine his passion for film and supporting the Scotland football team!
Gordon Mackay (first from left), protagonist
is a world-leading sports surgeon, researcher and the inventor of the revolutionary InternalBrace for ligament repair and reconstruction. With a father who was a professional footballer with top Scottish team Kilmarnock and a mother who was a doctor in Glasgow, Professor Mackay was destined to mix medicine and sport. The fusion occurred in 1988/9 when he was an aspiring footballer at Rangers FC in Glasgow and witnessed the impact of ligament and tendon injuries, not least on his own career.
We also highlight local filmmaker Róise Nic An Bheatha's short Le Chèile. It’s the world’s first narrative short in both Irish and Gaelic and it’s been selected for over 20 film festivals around the world. Róise will join us for a short Q&A as well.
