Event description
Urbanistas Rotterdam Excursion to The Sponge Garden and M4H district

About this Event

We believe in celebrating the work of women who create our city. Our past excursions have taken us to Pendrecht (Lotte Stam-Beese) and the RVS flat (Wilhemina Jansen), and now it’s time to step in to the present and explore projects which current Urbanistas are working on!

On Saturday 4th July, Urbanistas RDAM will be hosting an excursion to the Merwe-Vierhavens (M4H), and in particular the local project ‘Sponge Garden’. This former harbour area in the west of Rotterdam is currently undergoing a huge transformation and is one of the most happening areas of the city. Building on its rich maritime and industrial history, the vision is to become the cornerstone of a new ‘Makers District’ in Rotterdam - a base for the new economy and innovative industries, as well as an attractive living and working environment that brings the city and the harbour together.

We’ll start with a tour from Annette Mathhiessen (Senior Urban Designer) and Morva Farrokhseresht (Urbanist) from the Municipality of Rotterdam. They’ll guide us around the wider area, sharing stories about M4H, as well as recent and planned developments.

Then we’ll take some time to dive in to one project in particular – De Urbanisten’s ‘Sponge Garden’. Agate Kalnpure, Landscape Architect and lead designer of the project, will tell us more about this experimental garden, which focusses on how to improve the city climate, as well as cope with extreme rain events and droughts.

M4H really is an exciting place. Large recycling parks sit alongside community vegetable gardens; established industry alongside innovation; and soon also whole new neighbourhoods where people can live and work. We’d love you to join us to explore this fascinating part of Rotterdam!
