Exeter at Sea
Date and time
Join artists Sheila Ghelani and Sue Palmer as they bring maritime connections back to the city.
About this event
We are sorry to say we are unable to show Exeter at Sea this weekend in Southernhay Gardens due to one of the artists recently being pinged by the NHS Covid app and therefore having to self isolate until 10 August. We are very disapppointed about this and we were very much looking forward to sharing the work, but these are the times we are living in.
We are now making a plan to share the work in Exeter in the Autumn, working with the Outside the Box project team.
To mark what would have been, we would like to offer a way of connecting this weekend online.
If you are registered here on Eventbrite, you are invited to join Sheila and Sue on Saturday 7th August at 1pm for one hour.
This online introduction to Exeter at Sea is open to ticket holders only.
We will introduce our Exeter at Sea project, talk about some of the research and the places we have visited and the stories we have uncovered. We will share some of the materials and objects that have formed Exeter at Sea. We are not recreating the work online - that would not be possible - think of it like an artists talk!
If you would prefer not to be online, that's fine, we will see you in the Autumn.
We will also share with you an essay that we commissioned as part of the project by Deepa Bhasthi and some suggestions of places in Exeter where you can trace the East India Company, nature and trade in the city, if you are able to visit Southernhay Gardens and Exeter in person.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday at 1pm.

The Exeter was an East India Company ship that made 8 voyages from the UK to Bengal and China via St Helena around southern Africa, and back. Join artists Sheila Ghelani and Sue Palmer as they bring these connections back to the city, mapping the histories of elsewhere into Southernhay Gardens through a local / international heritage tour that lasts around 30 minutes.
Sheila Ghelani and Sue Palmer both work individually as artists whose work spans performance, audio and moving image. Each artist’s practice centres on using research to make artistic work with detail and resonance for public places.
Sheila and Sue were last in Exeter in 2019 when they shared Common Salt, their collaborative show and tell on nature, empire and memory at Southernhay House, presented by Scare the Horses.
