Exeter Girl Geek Dinners - Ada Lovelace Day 2014
Event Information
Description
Our next event is to celebrate Ada Lovelace Day. For this buffet event, we have a main speaker and will also be giving you a chance to practise your public speaking skills in front of a friendly audience.
Unsung Heroines of STEM
Inspired by Ann Kempster's talk about 300 Seconds at our last event and in line with ALD's aim to celebrate women in STEM, we're encouraging our members to come and talk to about not-so-famous women in STEM fields. If you'd like to volunteer for a 5-15 minute talk, join in on our discussion group. If you'd like to talk, but don't have an unsung heroine in mind, we have some suggestions!
Lucy Knight - Campaigning for Plain Data: the Cloche project
Lucy currently works in the Strategy and Policy team for Devon County Council. While working on different product ideas to improve data presentation within the council, Lucy and colleague Martin Howitt (IT Strategy Lead for the council) realised how inaccessible most data sets are to 99% of the population. They hit on the idea of a data storyboards rather than dashboards, and started campaigning for plain data, setting up the Cloche project while on a public service accelerator programme in Westminster in early 2014.
Lucy and Martin are pictured on the right at the project's final demo day.
