Event Details

Exeter Girl Geek Dinners is a group for women in and around Exeter, working, studying or interested in technology or science. We’re aiming to bring together like minded women to socialise, network, have fun and learn stuff.

Our first official Exeter Girl Geeks Dinner will be held on Wednesday 14th March 2012 at the lovely St Olave's Hotel in Exeter, who are providing a two course meal (out of a choice of three) and coffee for £16 (plus £1.05 Eventbrite fee)

At our first meeting we canvassed opinion on subjects that would be of interest (the full list can be seen here) and I'm pleased that our first two speakers will be talking about the two most popular suggestions:

Sam Adams profile pic Sam Adams - Current Directions in Robotics Research

"In this talk I'll discuss how the approach to building 'intelligent' machines
has changed over the last 50 years. I'll summarise the current strands of
Robotics research at the University of Plymouth emphasising the diversity
of work that takes place. Finally I'll briefly outline my own area of research and give a sneak preview of some of the cutting edge hardware that is just
becoming available for use in Robotics projects."

Paula Taylor - Notable events along the history of Computing with real life experiences of a British Computer Scientist

"Have you ever wondered who created the first home computer in the UK? Or about who ran the first commercial computer aided accounting system? Come along to the talk in St Olave's and hear an unscripted, frank account without visual aids by an individual who has been in the thick of it since the 1950's..."

Both speakers are hoping to bring along some hardware props for us to examine (play with?) and it promises to be a fascinating evening (with some great food to boot)

Can't join us this time?
