Venue: 10 Maple Street, London, W1T 5HA

The exhibition includes forty works from the collection of the Albaraka Turk Participation Bank in Istanbul. They comprise two categories:

1. Eleven works in jali thuluth and jali ta’liq script by the great masters of the nineteenth century, the golden age of Ottoman calligraphy, ably rendered in marbled paper by the contemporary artist Alparslan Babaoğlu.
2. Twenty-four works in thuluth, naskh, muhaqqaq, rayhani, jali ta’liq, and jali thuluth (a style mostly written in the form of vertically-stacked compositions [istif]).

While calligraphy is an independent art on its own, its beauty is dressed by the art of illumination. Born centuries ago in Central Asia, the Islamic art of manuscript illumination developed through the stylization into abstract motifs of plant and animal forms. These are painted with gold ink and various pigments, thus they acquired superb colors. The illumination on twenty-four of the works on exhibit are by young artists of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
