The exhibition displays both the processes and the results of the research project Transnationalizing Modern Languages. Mobility, dentity and ranslation in Modern Italian Cultures.
TML has focused its interests both on the Italian communities living abroad (specifically in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, South America and Africa) and on the migrant communities living in contemporary Italy. Focusing on a number of exemplary cases, representative of the geographical, historical and linguistic maps of Italian mobility, this project shows how Italian language and culture stretch beyond the geographical and territorial boundaries of the nation and operate through constant rewriting and reinventing of both traditions and stereotypical discourses.
The research materials on display (ranging from photos, to interviews, and a wide array of documents) come to life through a number of installations, which in turn act as a metonym for complex stories, allowing them to emerge and become fully visible. The exhibition space aims to produce an immersive, embodied experience, inviting visitors to identify with the stories traced by the research.
Beyond Borders. Transnational Italy features the photography project Italy Is Out by Mario Badagliacca.
