Description

The Silk River Project by ‘A’ Team Arts

Silk River is an ambitious project which explores the unique relationship between London and Kolkata through artistic exchange between communities along the Thames Estuary and India’s Hooghly River. The project culminates with 2 river walks, one in each city which reveal stories of 20 river communities through the showing of 20 giant hand-painted Bengali silk scrolls and accompanying performances.

On September 16th ‘A’ Team Arts participants provided a day of performances and site specific installations at six historic Tower Hamlets locations and traced the footsteps of migrant Huguenots and their silk weaving skills as well as the Irish, the Jewish and the Bengali communities that have all contributed to the textile industry in Brick Lane and the creative quarter that now exists. This exhibition features the Tower Hamlets scroll with supporting designs, samples and photographs of the walk.

In addition there is a display of the designed silk leaves that formed part of the ‘Mulberry Tree of Aspiration’ installation at Mulberry school. Reflecting on the underlying theme of ‘Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow’. The beautiful designs focus strongly on young people’s aspirations for the future, their local communities and the environment. Using silk painting and batik, the leaves are symbolic reference to Tower Hamlets’ historical link to silk manufacturing and the tradition of making handmade textiles.

A drop in workshop from 5.30pm-7pm will take place on 16th November when you can come along and make your own ‘leaf of aspiration’. This will then culminate in a perforamnce Silk River Forever Hoorah! which has been adapted for the stage and devised as part of the Silk River performance walk by the House of Talent youth. This production follows the changing migration, trade and social landscape of Tower Hamlets through song, drama, spoken word and declamatory storytelling.
