Event description
QMUL Nobel Lectures: 2019 Physics Laureate Didier Queloz Public Lecture about finding Planets around other stars and potential for life

About this event

Abstract: Exoplanets discovered in the last 25 years exhibit an amazing diversity that has no counterpart in our Solar system. This is a challenge to understand the origin of our Solar and the origin of life. After a short review of the exoplanet field of research, my talk will focus on two specific programs aiming to detect Earth twin systems amenable for future work about origins of life. First “Speculoos survey” currently in operation and looking for Earth size planet transiting ultra-cool dwarfs, second “Terra Hunting Experiment” designed to detect Earth twin. These two projects will be presented in the general context of recent works about possible minimum conditions required on Earth to allow for the formation of life chemical building blocks.

As part of Queen Mary University of London's Public Lecture Series, and in partnership with The Engineering Seminar Series, Professor Didier Queloz (2019 Nobel Prize in Physics) will give a public lecture at Queen Mary on Tuesday 3rd March 2020. This talk will be focus on recent work on finding planets in extra-solar systems that led to the Nobel Prize, and implications for finding life elsewhere in the universe. There will be extensive time for questions and discussions with guests with a Q & A following the talk.

This free event is open for all students and staff of the University, Alumni, and all members of the general public. Please register your place to guarantee your attendance.

(Professor Didier Queloz will also be hosting a specialist Lecture on this topic at 3pm on the 3rd March in the SEMS seminar room in Engineering).
