Expanding Ceramic Skills - Handbuilding and Surface Decoration (June 2017)

If you have a grasp of handbuilding and decorating you can now develop more complex forms and surfaces with the guidance of the tutor.
There will also be introductions to new surface techniques.
Week 1 -
Demonstrate and make slab building with curved walls
Demonstrate and make sprig moulds
Week 2 - Handbuilding
Carving into clay
Demonstrate and use sprig moulds
Create self directed form using either coiling or slab building
Week 3 - Surface decoration
Please note: Per person, the course price includes 6 kg of white earthenware clay, slip (5 colours) glaze (white and transparent), 1kg plaster, oxides (3 colours) and two kiln firings per objects made. It is possible for students to purchase clay during the course. Additional clay will be charged at £4 per 1 kg of fired work. Work should be paid for on collection (cash only).
Collecting work: Students will be notified when their work is ready to collect after the course. Work made must be collected within 14 days after the final session. Please make arrangements with your tutor. There will be 4 fixed pick up days/times. We are unable to store students work for longer than this time.
*Work can be damaged during the firing process.
Please wear an apron or old clothes.

Alex Simpson obtained her masters in Ceramics from the Royal College of Art. She works as a technician at the RCA and at a school. Her own practice uses fired and unfired clay to create sculptures and installations. To view her work click here.
Lauren Ilsley is a sculptor who has been working with clay for over 10 years. She obtained her Masters degree in ceramics from the Royal College of Art, and is a tutor and technician alongside her practice. To view her work click here.
