A rare opportunity to experience a traditional working water mill and learn all about the craft of milling grain.

About this event

The third event in our series of training days this summer where you have the opportunity to spend a day at Y Felin, a traditional working water mill.

The day will begin with a welcome, health and safety instructions and a brief introduction to the mill. We hope to go through the miller’s day stage by stage:

  • a walk to examine the mill pond and source of water
  • grain preparation and cleaning (including choosing, buying, storage etc)
  • set up stones (discussion about stone dressing, cleaning and maintenance )
  • lunch
  • operating the mill
  • wire machine operation and flour dressing
  • discussion about grain choices and baking with stoneground flour (with samples

At each stage we will talk about maintenance and restoration. We hope the day will be informal, responding to the specific questions and interests of the participants.

Participants will need basic level of fitness (the mill is not really very accessible for anyone with mobility concerns) strong shoes not sandals, not your best clothes (a clean overall or apron might protect clothes) as it gets dusty! A mask might help with that too (people with asthma have found parts of the mill a challenge).

Bring your own lunch. Hot and cold drinks will be provided.

A total of 12 places are availble at Y Felin. We are also running a similar experience day at Felin Ganol, near Aberystwyth on the 17th August.

Attending our course on the 11th June at St Fagans will be helpful to anyone with little prior knowledge of wind and watermills but is not essential.

Our events are supported by a “Magic Little Grant” from the fund raising platform Localgiving, https://localgiving.org/about/magic-little-grants/ working together with the Peoples Postcode Lottery. Grants are given to small charities, community groups and societies to help launch or strengthen their services. Our supported events consist of a series of linked Training Days, designed to help people to recognise, understand, record and appreciate wind and water mills in Wales.
