Event description

* Live well with trees * Discover shinrin-yoku – and increase your health and wellbeing with a forest bathing session in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire.

Shinrin-yoku (or forest bathing) means ‘bathing’ all the senses, whilst taking in the forest atmosphere. It's a slow practice; this session involving walking no more than 2km. Shinrin-yoku is restorative, both mentally and physically, like a bath.

Regular forest bathing lowers blood pressure, reduces stress, improves empathy and creativity, and boosts our immune systems!

What to expect...

Your experience will be guided by trained forest therapy practitioner Carina Greenwood.

  • Carina will offer four invitations; lasting between 10 and 20 minutes designed to connect you with the surroundings, to tune in your senses.
  • A 'foraged tea' ceremony in the forest and some light, healthy snacks.
  • A safe woodland base with an outdoor fire.

Where does Shinrin-yoku come from?

Shinrin-yoku (森林浴) originated in Japan. The term was coined by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 1982. Japan’s Forest Agency has invested $4 million to study forest bathing and set up the ‘International Society of Nature and Forest Medicine’.

Is it a solo or group thing?

It’s a reflective experience. Group sizes are intentionally small, typically 4-6 people, making it a great gift for your partner, friend, or as a couple.

Who is it for?

Unlike many other forest activities, it’s especially suitable for those who may not choose normally to go for a walk in the woods or exert themselves. It’s not necessary to be particularly fit. It’s gentle, inclusive, pleasurable and welcoming – perfect for those convalescing or taking time out from busy lives.

What to bring?

Forest bathing is slow. It’s not a physically exerting activity, but it is outside for the duration, so it’s very important to stay warm.

Although we will have an open fire as a base from which we will not go far, many more clothes are needed than for a normal walk in the woods.

  • Warm clothing: hats, gloves, thermals, extra jumpers, extra socks, leggings under trousers, thick coats (or layers which can go in a back pack, along with waterproof clothing), walking boots (preferably not wellies or trainers, if you would like to borrow walking boots please let Carina know).
  • A notepad or sketchbook (if you wish).

What are the parking / transport options?

The Wilderness Centre has a free car park for visitors with disabled parking.

What facilities are there at the Wilderness Centre - and how accessible is it?

Facilities: fire pit, disabled parking and toilets. Toilets are 200m from the parking and also from the woods. On returning to the site it is necessary to go up a gradually sloping tarmac driveway.

What is the woodland site like?

It's a small mixed woodland, enclosed on three sides. The paths are made up of well trodden natural forest tracks and are on flat ground.

How can I contact the organiser?

You can contact Carina directly by emailing carina@forestbathe.co.uk. Carina will get in touch with you before the event via email.

Can a forest bathing experience cater for my specific mental of physical health needs?

Please inform Carina if you think there is anything she should be aware of regarding your mental or physical health. You can do this by filling out the brief questionnaire you will receive by email shortly after booking. Please check your junk emails if it has not arrived or contact Carina.

She will make every effort to make sure that your needs are catered for and is happy to chat to you about this prior to booking if you have questions or concerns at carina@forestbathe.co.uk.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

It helps, but it isn't a requirement.

Can I update my registration information?

Yes, please get in touch with Carina to do so.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. Please check your emails from Forestbathe prior to attending in case of cancellation (due to adverse weather conditions or other unlikely unforeseen circumstances), in these cases Carina will transfer your ticket to a new future date.

Can I buy Forest Bathe Experience as a gift?

Yes! If you’re buying the experience for someone else or indeed for yourself, please do not book later than 24hrs before the date so that Carina can provide for your individual needs having been in touch by email.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

This is okay, however Carina would prefer the name to be that of the person on the ticket (unless the replacement person is prepared to fill out a brief form on arrival regarding medical conditions/needs if any and sign it).
