Description

Experience communities in the north west of England including Liverpool, Sefton, Wirral and St Helens, showcasing unique approaches to engaging with young people local YMCAs support including horticulture and motor mechanics.

These communities are famous for The Beatles, Liverpool cathedral, Liver Bird statues, home to the River Mersey, and greatly influenced by the Industrial Revolution - which itself contributed to the birth of YMCA.

Highlights of this Discovery Visit will include:

  • Iconic “Ferry Across The Mersey” sightseeing cruise

  • Community meal at YMCA Wirral

  • Celebration and Thanksgiving Service at the historic Parish Church of Liverpool, Our Lady and St Nicholas – situated by the historic Liverpool waterfront and World Heritage Site

  • Watch St Helens Rugby play against Wakefield at home and enjoy hospitality at Langtree Park Stadium.

  • Visit and tour of YMCA Liverpool’s Dutch Farm Project, including a British Afternoon Cream Tea, at its urban farm that provides a therapeutic environment that engages young people in the production of organic vegetables, livestock management, and the development of creative outlets.


The activities planned will share and celebrate what is rewarding about YMCAs work in this region of England, the role it plays within local communities, and the collaborative approach of multiple local YMCAs on how they work together to seek local solutions to complex national

problems.

There will be opportunity to learn about local culture and rich heritage of YMCA in the north west. YMCA Liverpool was one of the first YMCAs founded outside of London, in 1846.

This visit is being coordinated by YMCA Liverpool & Sefton; YMCA Wirral and YMCA St Helens.

Trip Information
Your trip start point is at the accommodation in Liverpool on 31 July and you will need to arrange transport to this location. Please ensure you are ready to begin the visit at 11am on Thursday 1 August. Your visit will finish at the accommodation in Liverpool on Sunday 4 August and you will need to arrange transport to London for the start of YMCA175 conference.

Accommodation is included for the nights of Wednesday 31 July, Thursday 1, Friday 2 and Saturday 3 August, catering begins with lunch on Thursday 1 August.

Helpful Travel Information
The closest airport for this visit is Liverpool John Lennon airport 20 minutes outside of the city. Manchester Airport is only 45 minutes from Liverpool city centre and offers many direct long haul routes in to the North West. Carriers include British Airways, Emirates, Etihad and KLM.
