Experiences of loneliness at the end of life in Northern Ireland
Event Information
About this event
One in 5 people in Northern Ireland report feeling lonely and, due to their older age, declining health and other circumstances, many terminally ill people are particularly vulnerable to loneliness.
The impact of loneliness on these groups can be devastating – making their physical symptoms worse, affecting their mental health, driving greater use of health and social care services and robbing them of a good quality of life before they die.
This webinar will provide an overview of a new policy report from Marie Curie and the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Queen's University Belfast, which explores the drivers and impact of loneliness at the end of life from the perspective of Marie Curie’s frontline care staff. Our work is among the first dedicated examinations of loneliness among terminally ill people and end of life carers that has ever been carried out in Northern Ireland.
Delegates will hear from:
- Sinéad Bradley MLA, Chair of the All Party Group on Preventing Loneliness in the NI Assembly
- Craig Harrison, Policy Manager at Marie Curie Northern Ireland and lead author of the policy report
- Sharon Sinclair, Country Director of the British Red Cross in Northern Ireland
- Majella Brogan, Registered Nurse, Marie Curie Nursing Service
