10 WEEK COURSE

TUESDAY EVENINGS 24th SEPTEMBER - 3rd DECEMBER 2019

6:00pm - 8:30pm

* Please note there will be a half term break with no session on 29th October*

This 10 week course will introduce you to a number of printmaking processes that you can access at Leeds Print Workshop. Each week will include a demonstration of a process including Lino, Collograph, Drypoint, Monoprint and Screen Printing. You will then get the opportunity to print using various presses including our traditional Albion Press, Hawthorn and Rollaco Etching Presses and our newly acquired Morgan Line-O-Scribe Proofing Press.

Over the 10 weeks the tutor will demonstrate:

  • Monoprinting - using oil based relief printing inks you will produce one-off multicolour prints working with paper stencils and our presses.

  • Collograph - you will use collage to create images that can be relief and intaglio printed using our etching presses

  • Drypoint - working directly onto a printing plate you will use various mark-making tools and then print using our specialist our presses.

  • Linocut - Single colour. Using specialist cutting tools you will be shown how to safely cut lino and print using relief inks, rollers, presses, barens and burnishers.

  • Reduction Linocut - multiple colours. Over two sessions you will further using lino cutting and printing to produce layered multiple coloured prints.

  • Proofing Press - You will have a demonstration of a simple set up for our proofing press with wooden Letterpress type and will get a chance to print from this.

  • Screen Printing - In the final session you will be shown the basics of screen printing and will have a chance to print and heat press a tote bag to take all your prints home in.

You will learn each of the processes in a supportive environment with all equipment and materials provided.

What experience do I need?

This course is suitable for complete beginners or people who have done some printmaking before and want a refresher. You don’t need to have any previous experience as the tutor will guide you through each process in a step-by-step way. All the processes lend themselves well to simple image making using pattern as well as representational images so don’t be put off if you don’t feel confident with drawing.

What will I make?

With Monoprint and Collagraph expect to make up to about 20 different A4 prints (on A3 paper) in each session. For Drypoint expect to make up to 10 variations of an A5 or A6 printing plate on A4 or A5 paper. With Linocut you would expect to make an A5 printing plate and around 10 copies of the print on A4 paper. You will also make some prints on the proofing press and a Leeds Print Workshop tote bag to take everything home in.

Who is my tutor?

Joanna Wilkinson is a practising printmaker, illustrator and bookbinder. She uses printing, collage, analogue/slow photography and sometimes even old style colouring techniques like felt tips in her work! Joanna is currently studying for an MA Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University and is also a Co-operative Member of Leeds Print Workshop. She has been working with us over the last two years as a keyholder to support our members and teaching courses in printmaking and bookbinding. She has experience in teaching a wide variety of different groups of people including children and adults.

Do I need to bring anything?

All the materials needed to produce the prints described above will be provided for the course. This will include relief inks and rollers, card, plastic, softcut lino and paper to print on. Leeds Print Workshop also has a small stock of materials that you can purchase to take away with you or use as extra materials on the course if you are particularly prolific when making prints. You can also purchase a portfolio folder to take your prints home each week.

If I can't attend can I get a refund?

We will refund you in full if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the course, after which no refunds will be issued. By making a booking you are agreeing to our full course terms and conditions which can be found on our website here.

What if the course is cancelled?

We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.
