About this event

  • Event lasts 6 hours

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world's biggest performing arts festival... with more than 2,000 shows a day during almost the entire month of August. If you've not been before, it can be difficult to know where to start.

So we invite you to come out with us for an evening exploring the Fringe with us and some of our members.

During the evening we'll:

  • See some of the best, weirdest shows we could find
  • Drop by some of our favourite subterranean, haunted pubs
  • Have at least one visceral arthouse immersive experience
  • Take in street performers on the Royal Mile
  • Try some of the iconic foodstuffs for which Edinburgh is known
  • Optionally stay up until 01:00 for some really weird free shows

We're the International Ghost Society - Edinburgh's most eclectic historical society. We're local to Edinburgh and have been going to (and sometimes even performing at) the Fringe for nearly ten years now. We know the city pretty well, and we love sharing it with people!

Our preference is for shows that are weird, experimental, anarchic and fun - all things that characterise the Festival. We're less interested in high-profile comics who you can see on television, or straightforward theatre shows that you can see elsewhere throughout the year.

You'll be part of a very small group of like-minded people, all of whom are up for exploring, experiencing, and getting the most out of the Fringe.

PS: Our starting location is the live music bar Whistlebinkies on South Bridge. You'll find us in one of the "caves" at the very back of the venue. Look out for a friendly ghost on our table!

Frequently asked questions

Will the shows be good?

Probably! We can't guarantee you'll enjoy them, but we'll be seeing some shows that WE think are excellent. If you stay until the end, the final "lucky dip" show may well be atrocious, but that's all part of the Fringe experience.

What does a ticket cover?

When you join us for this event, tickets to all of the shows we see (at least two, probably three) are covered, and we'll provide some snacks and a round or two. You may wish to purchase other food or drinks throughout the evening.

What shows will we go and see?

We think not knowing exactly what you'll see enhances the experience... but, if you really want to know you can email us and we'll tell you (hello@ghostsociety.co.uk).

Who are you?

The International Ghost Society has been orchestrating weird events in Edinburgh for a few years now. You can find out more about us at www.ghostsociety.co.uk. The Society is run by Sam and Kris, two Edinburgh residents and veterans of the Fringe. Hi!

Can children come along?

Unfortunately, no; several of the venues we'll be visiting during this evening don't allow anyone under 18 years old to enter.

Can I bring a pet?

Probably not, but drop us an email and we'll check with all of the venues. Most venues, however, don't allow pets.

Do I need to bring anything?

Just yourself... although you may need to use your phone during one of the shows we'll be seeing. Don't worry if you don't have a phone, though - we can lend you one for that show if necessary.

I want to know more about the Fringe!

We'd recommend the official Fringe website (http://edfringe.com/), but if you have any specific questions please don't hesitate to drop us a line (hello@ghostsociety.co.uk). We can even recommend you shows if you're not sure what to see.
