Step into the world that inspired Middle-earth. On this private, guided walking tour, you'll visit key locations that shaped J.R.R. Tolkien's imagination during his childhood in Birmingham.
Led by a local Tolkien enthusiast, this 2-hour experience takes you through enchanting landscapes, forgotten footpaths, and places that directly influenced the creation of the Shire, Hobbiton, and Tolkien’s magical forests. Including Tolkien first home in Birmingham! (the inside cannot be explored as it is occupied). Along the way, enjoy fun quizzes, behind-the-scenes stories, and fascinating insights into Tolkien’s early life.
This is a guided tour only, led by a local Tolkien enthusiast. The route includes areas that are difficult to navigate without local knowledge, as well as hidden gems that are easy to miss unless guided. For a full, safe, and enriching experience, it’s recommended to follow the tour guide rather than attempt the route independently as you can easily get lost in the nature reserve and shires

- Meeting Point: Sarehole Mill Car Park(Limited parking available on-site, but street parking nearby are available) (please note that this tour is private and not part of the sarehole mill business)

Unfortunately, the tour is not suitable for those with limited mobility due to uneven footpaths and natural terrain.
Tours may be cancelled in the event of bad weather.

- Photos will be taken throughout the tour. If you do not wish for your photo to be taken please inform the tour guide on the day.
Please note, the on-site café near Tolkien’s childhood area (Sarehole Mill) is temporarily closed, but all other attractions on the tour route remain open. Refreshments can be picked up from a nearby Co-op if needed.
