About this event

  • Event lasts 4 hours 30 minutes

To celebrate our 25th anniversary year, Moor Trees is putting on a series of informative Walk and Talks to inspire and inform people about the work we are doing to create and restore native woodland on Dartmoor.

Join us at Shaugh Prior for a tour of one of the richest and best examples of temperate rainforest, led by our two experts, lichenologist April Windle and established Dartmoor photographer, Tom Dauben.

We’ll be encouraging you to look at both the macro and the wider landscape and understand just how rich these ecosystems are. By looking at the tiny details to distinguish lichens and mosses, and hearing captivating stories about specific species which thrive in these rare and globally important habitats, April will inspire you to notice the tiny details, whilst Tom will be available to guide on how to create beautiful and memorable images. As an expert in photography, he has specialised in unedited photographs of the moor, making the most of natural light and composition.

The walk will inform you about the magical ecosystem you are exploring, and advise and give top tips on how to capture the majesty of these unique and special habitats through photography. The network of wooded valleys across Dartmoor are of international importance, supporting species not found anywhere else in the world outside of Britain & Ireland. Join us to explore their wonders and encounter the rich wooded landscape around the river valleys and the abundance of wildlife it can support. This is the landscape that Moor Trees is supporting and creating. Using photography to celebrate the wonder of Dartmoor’s ancient woodland, we hope that this walk will allow you to learn about and develop a deeper appreciation for a healthy, vibrant woodland ecosystem. Participants will be encouraged to share their images and tag us on socials.

Participants will require a moderate level of fitness as the terrain may be rough, rocky, potentially wet and includes some steep areas, walking boots or similar would be advisable. The route will include a lunch stop (please bring a packed lunch). As this is a guided walk on Dartmoor, please be aware there is no toilet facilities on the route or at the meeting points. The walk will be out in the elements, so bring suitable clothing for the weather.

We will be meeting at 10:30am at Shaugh Prior woods car park, west of Shaugh Prior, 3 miles from the A386 Tavistock to Plymouth road.

Parking is free, no overnight parking allowed.

Come and join Moor Trees! We need your help, whether for a day, or as a regular volunteer. You could be collecting local seeds, caring for thousands of seedlings in our nurseries or to planting and maintaining conservation woodland.

We have two large nurseries at Broadley Farm, Diptford, near South Brent and Hunter’s Moon in Dartington. Woodland sites are scattered around Dartmoor and in the South Hams. Tree planting takes place between November and April while nursery work – potting, planting and weeding seedlings happens throughout the year. In summer we visit newly planted sites and in the autumn we collect seeds, nuts and acorns and learn various treatment methods to encourage germination.

Volunteers of all ages, abilities and cultures are welcome. We are a friendly group and volunteering with us is a wonderful opportunity to work with other enthusiastic people in beautiful settings, to get healthy exercise outdoors and to make new friends. No previous experience is needed: we explain all the tasks and teach you how to do them.

We ask you to bring a packed lunch, sturdy footwear and outdoor clothing with waterproofs if necessary. Tea, biscuits, hot drinks and tools are provided free by us.
