Description

Friday 21 August – Explore the Thames by river boat

Take a panoramic tour of London by riverboat. Exploring lots of different London neighbourhoods to get an overview of how they fit together can mean frustrating hours wasted in traffic jams, but not if you travel by river boat! The Thames was one of the main reasons for London’s founding location and the city grew along the river, so many of its most historic neighbourhoods and impressive building face onto the river.

We will travel by comfortable Thames Clippers, sitting together so Caroline can talk and point out the sights as we sail by. We will start by leaving the city centre (and tourist hordes!) behind us to travel out through the historic Docklands (Wapping and Rotherhithe), enjoy dramatic views of Canary Wharf and majestic elegant maritime Greenwich, then continue further east to the newly developing London neighbourhoods growing in North Greenwich around the O2 and in the Royal Docks. We will alight here to admire dramatic views of the Thames Barrier, London’s protector. Having stretched our legs, we will hop back on the boat to head back into central London. Caroline will take the opportunity to point out more sights and tall us more about the history of the river Thames itself. This is the time of summer evening when the gentle summer light is perfect for photography. Heading under the iconic Tower Bridge we will then sail through central London as Caroline points out all the famous buildings lining and crossing the Thames, including London Bridge, the Globe, the Millennium Bridge, Tate Modern, the Temple, the National Theatre and Southbank Centre, the Houses of Parliament, and ending at the London Eye.

As Wordsworth said of the view of the river Thames from Westminster Bridge “Earth has not anything to show more fair”

You will need to have an oyster card to pay for your Thames Clippers river boat ticket.

As at 2019 prices, you will need to pay 2 x Central & East zone single ticket @ £7.30 = £14:60

Meet: at 17:45 prompt at Tower Pier, DO NOT BE LATE as we will be immediately joining the queue for the next boat

End: approx. 20:15 at the London Eye
