Description

Help us to inspire young people at Explore Your Horizons 2019

Held in partnership with Marylebone Cricket Club, our Explore your Horizons: Speed Networking Event event gives over 250 young Londoners the opportunity to gain careers advice in one-on-one, five-minute networking sessions with professionals from the world of work.

This is our fifth year running Explore Your Horizons. Since 2015, over 1,000 business volunteers have volunteered to join our flagship annual event helping 1,500 students understand the diversity of opportunities available to them across London.

On the day, you will meet ten students and share insight about your career and industry, in short face-to-face conversations. A full briefing resource will be provided ahead of the event and this will not require any preparation.

You can take a look at pictures and a video from previous years’ events here.

This event is open to volunteers from all industries and roles. Please share this link with colleagues, friends and your wider networks.

We look forward to seeing you there!

FAQs

Can I attend with a group of my colleagues/friends?

Absolutely! You can register yourself and up to 4 colleagues via this eventbrite. If you would like to attend as a group of more than five people, please email us at enterpriseadvisers@london.gov.uk and we will reserve up to 15 places for you.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Lord's Cricket Ground's North Gate is located a short 5 minute walk away from St John's Wood Station (Zone 2). Unfortunately, parking will not be available at this event. If you have access requirements please get in touch with us at enterpriseadvisers@london.gov.uk.

What can I bring into the event?

You do not need to bring anything in particular to this event but if you would like to bring any props to help explain your organisation or role we ask that you keep these to small handheld items. Please do not bring any products from your organisation to give to the students. A cloakroom will also be made available for your personal items.

Will lunch be provided?

Unfortunately, lunch will not be provided on the day to our business volunteers to help us minimise the cost of hosting this free event for young people and volunteers. We recommend that you have lunch before arriving at the venue as there will be limited time to eat once the speed networking begins at 12.45.

How many young people will I speak to on the day?

Each business volunteer will network with more than 10 young people at the event. Research from Education and Employers suggests that young peple who have four or more encounters with employers before they leave school are 86% less likely to be NEET 'not in education, employment or training'. They also earn up to 16.4% more than peers who do not take part in any such activities.

What will I be asked to talk to the young people about? Do I need to prepare anything ahead of the event?

You do not need to prepare anything specific ahead of this event, just come along ready to talk about your own career path, industry and experiences. You may however wish to think about how you can explain your role in simple, plain english and we ask that you avoid the use of industry specific jargon as much as possible.

A full briefing will be provided to attendees ahead of the event.

Will I get a chance to network with the other business volunteers at the event?

Time has been allocated both before and after the event for our business volunteers to network with each other should they wish to do so. We will also be providing information about the London Enterprise Adviser Network, a network of more than 270 senior business professionals from across London who are working with schools and colleges to help more young people gain experiences of the world of work.

*Please note there will be a photographer present. Please inform a member of Team London if you do not give consent for your photos /images/video to be taken during this event to be used by GLA.
