Exploring Architecture: Classical Clay
Thursday 1st May 2025, 2pm-3.30pm
Join RIBA Learning for an afternoon of moulding, squeezing and carving with clay. We’ll look to classical architecture and the RIBA collection for inspiration in designing and building our own architectural elements – from extruded columns and cornices to embossed pediments and sculpted capitals. We’ll understand how different clay moulding techniques can be used for making models or scaled up to produce architectural building materials at an industrial scale. All before getting stuck in and using those same techniques to produce our own bricks, arches and facades.
This event is for anyone aged 55 or over that has an interest in discovering more about architecture, with a chance for discussion and refreshments in the Clore Learning Centre after the tour.
Free, please book a place.
Exploring Architecture is a monthly free event at 66 Portland Place, usually on the first of the month based in the Clore Learning Centre. Each month will take a different format, including tours, creative activities and special insights into the RIBA Collections with an opportunity to socialise.
The workshop leaders are Lil Adams and Edie Parfitt from RIBA Learning. Lil is artist, jeweller and educator, and Edie is an architectural designer and maker with experience running clay-focused workshops. The RIBA Learning programme provides exciting opportunities for everyone to explore, question and celebrate architecture.
