About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

Join Community BlueScapes for a walk around Leg o' Mutton to discover the wildlife that exists here.

Leg o' Mutton is a designated Local Nature Reserve where cormorant, heron, tufted duck and breeding common terns can be seen during the day.

Join Will Dartnell, Conservation Manager at Barnes Common Limited, for a guided exploration of the Leg o’ Mutton nature reserve.

Discover the secret superpowers of blue space as we delve into the local wildlife that rely on these reserves, how the space changes through the seasons, and the wonderful species you might spot along the way.

We’ll be discussing the role that wetlands play in the local ecosystem and the world of wildlife they support.

Please note, due to the narrow paths at Leg o' Mutton, places are limited and booking is essential. Dress appropriately as light showers could be expected and walking shoes will be needed to walk through the reserve.

This event is subject to cancellation at short notice in case of very wet weather.

We will meet at the interpretation board (see photo below) just inside the large gate at the southern end of the reservoir on the river side (near Small Profit Dock Gardens). Use ///jungle.fried.stays for What3Words or this link for Google Maps.

Please note, dogs will not be admitted at this event except guide dogs. All our events are dog free unless specifically mentioned in the event listing.

Community BlueScapes is a partnership between London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, Barnes Common Limited, and WWT. We are coming together to create healthier neighbourhoods in the Beverley Brook catchment in Richmond and ensure our communities are flood and weather resilient in the near future.

We've been awarded £6million by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs as part of the £200 million Flood and Coastal Innovation Programmes managed by the Environment Agency. The programme will drive innovation in flood and coastal resilience and help our residents adapt to a changing climate.

Organised by

Working in partnership with Richmond Council, Barnes Common Limited (BCL) a local independent charity oversees the stewardship of Barnes Common, the Leg o' Mutton Local Nature Reserve and Vine Road Recreation Ground (affectionately known as Vine Road Park).

Conservation has always been at the heart of all that we do and continues to be today. Whether we are preserving precious woodlands, creating important wildlife habitats, sowing seeds in our Community Growing area, introducing the community to the bats at Leg o' Mutton or engaging the community in our Lifelong Learning program, the Vine Road Project and Flood Resilience.
