Description

THE COURSE

This course is suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced, as much of the tuition is on a one-to-one basis as well as frequent group demonstrations. Italic is a key script for calligraphers, useful both in its basic form and in its many interesting variations. Exercises and projects will be given by Gaynor to lead each person forward at their own pace. The script(s) will be used in the layout and design of short texts including use of colour in the pen as well as the background.

TUTOR

Gaynor Goffe has been a professional calligrapher for 40 years. She works to commission and is well-known for teaching, including at the Roehampton Institute and at Reigate School of Art & Design. She is a fellow of the Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society, the Society of Scribes & Illuminators, an elected member of Letter Exchange and has taught widely throughout Europe, the USA and Japan. Her calligraphic interest lies particularly in exploring text relating to natural landscapes and incorporating calligraphy, carved stone and mixed media in exploratory works. She has written two calligraphy books and in 2000 was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society. Her typeface ’Hamada’ was commissioned and digitized by Linotype in 2009.
