The University of Southampton REACH (Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage) Staff Network, in collaboration with Widening Participation & Social Mobility and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, are pleased to announce an upcoming event commemorating World Refugee day.

This event is a unique opportunity to hear directly from those who have experienced displacement and resettlement and gain a deeper understanding of the legal and policy frameworks that shape their lives.

Speakers:

Dr Homira May Rezai, PhD

Dr Rezai is the Chief Operating Officer of MirZyme Therapeutics, an innovative pharmaceutical company developing diagnostics and therapeutics for pregnancy complications. She holds a PhD in Medical Research. May is a Hazara from Afghanistan who arrived in the UK at the age of 13 in 2006. She currently serves as the Chairwoman of Hazara Committee in the UK (HCUK), a non-profit organisation working for the protection of Hazaras around the world.

Hewan Esran Omar

Hewan is one of the thousands of Yezidis who fled ISIS in 2014 and endured the struggles and discrimination that followed. After graduating with an English degree from the University of Duhok in 2016, she worked as a translator and interpreter, an English language instructor, a secretary, and a women’s rights advocate. After experiencing religious and gender-based discrimination in previous jobs, Hewan came to the Free Yezidi Foundation with a strong dedication to fighting for the right of Yezidis, especially women, and uplifting their voices.

Barrister Dr S Chelvan

Dr Chelvan specialises in the claims of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans or intersex (LGBTI) asylum seekers fleeing homophobic or transphobic persecution. He will provide insights into the legal issues facing refugees and asylum seekers, including the asylum process, human rights, and access to justice.

Dr Chelvan is Head of Immigration and Public Law at 33 Bedford Row Chambers, and a Visiting Adjunct Professor at Southampton Law School.

The event will be held at the Turner Sims on Highfield Campus on Tuesday 20th June 2023, from 18:15 to 19:45.
