Arts Active, the education and community department of St David’s Hall, Cardiff, are pleased to offer this two day Javanese gamelan course. Working with highly trained gamelan tutors our regular gamelan courses offer those who have never played before, those with experience and those wishing to expand further into more complex instruments, the opportunity to develop and nurture their interest.
This December we are inviting you to spend two days in the heart of the city expanding your repertoire and knowledge of pelog music along with the chance to learn new techniques on instruments such as bonangs, sarons and drums.
For those of you wanting to get to grips with instruments like Gender Barung, Gender Panerus, and Gambang; this weekend will touch on these instruments however; our Spring Gamelan course will focus in depth on these embellishing instruments. More information about our Spring course will be coming soon.
Tutor: Jonathan Roberts
Jonathan started playing gamelan whilst at university and went on to study Javanese music at one of Java’s most prestigious arts academies, STSI Surakarta, on a bursary from the Indonesian Government. He teaches gamelan for the Cardiff University School of Music, and for the Cheltenham Festivals and Southbank Centre gamelan programmes and taught for the Birmingham Conservatoire and Hertfordshire and Hampshire Music Services. He has just been awarded his PhD in ethnomusicology at the University of Oxford for a thesis on gamelan.
Jonathan also performs regularly with the Southbank Gamelan Players in London, Widosari in Amsterdam, and Surya Kencana A in Budapest. He is also a founder member of Laras Laris, a chamber gamelan ensemble which specialises in lighter, song-based repertoire.
