About this event

Meeting point: A meeting point in central Stirling will be advised to those booking a place.

Purpose: Identifying, understanding and recording historic finishes on buildings should be a baseline for carrying out well considered conservation work. Informed approaches can contribute to good technical solutions that improve weathering and thermal performance, whilst reinforcing local distinctiveness.

Historic finishes often survive but knowing what to look for and where is key! This walking tour will provide an introduction to inspecting buildings for evidence of historic lime finishes; including the remains of harling and different pointing styles.

The event contributes to 2 hours of IHBC CPD with content related to Philosophy, History, and Research, Recording and Analysis- IHBC Competencies 1,3 & 4.

About our Guide:The walking tour will be led by Dr Tim Meek, co-author of Historic Environment Scotland's Technical Paper 31 and author of Technical Paper 33; a former practitioner with first-hand experience of working with lime mortars and harls.

Location:We will start at 1:30pm ( precise location to be confirmed) for an introduction before heading out for the walking tour. The tour will last approximately two hours. Please be aware that the ground may be uneven in places and that the Scottish weather is not always kind! Please dress appropriately.
