Exploring Mixed Media with Rachael Singleton: Adding dimension through the magic of wet-strength tissues
Join artist Rachael Singleton for an immersive and dynamic workshop delving into the versatile world of mixed-media artistry. This engaging session is designed to spark creativity and experimentation through the use of gel plates and wet-strength tissues to craft unique and layered artworks.
Morning Session:
Discover the magic of gel plates and wet-strength tissues as you spend the morning creating captivating papers. Rachael will guide you through techniques to harness transparency in your prints, exploring the fascinating layers that emerge in the process.
Afternoon Session:
Rachael will present various alternative uses for the tissues, including papier-mâché, collage construction, establishing foundations for fine art painting, and incorporating them seamlessly with fabrics. Participants will be provided with pre-prepared surfaces adorned with glued papers to paint onto, enhancing them further with a medley of mixed media, such as oil pastels, to accentuate textures and create captivating visuals. Rachael will share her own examples, showcasing how this technique can bring seascapes and forest landscapes to life.
Individual Exploration:
Participants will have the opportunity to revisit their morning creations and channel their newfound inspiration into crafting individual collages or sketchbook samples. Rachael will offer guidance and encouragement, fostering an environment where each participant can explore their unique artistic vision.
Materials to bring:
- 3 or 4 assorted brushes (inc one flat brush if possible)
- Red, blue and yellow, black and white acrylic paint
- Brayer (roller)
- Newspaper
- Baby wipes
- Plastic sheet or bags to lay papers on
- Masking tape
- Sketchbook or sheets of paper thick enough to take wet media (no bigger than A4)
- Acrylic matt gel medium or PVA glue
- Oil pastels (optional)
- Acrylic inks (optional)
- Black Sharpie or black or white Posca pens if you have them
- Paper scissors
- Few household objects from home that might be interesting to make prints with (string, bottle tops, buttons, corrugated card, bubble wrap…)
Materials Provided:
- Water pot
- There will be stencils for use with gel plates but bring your own if you have them
- There will be gel plates to borrow but bring your own if you have one
- Wet-strength tissues are provided for the workshop but you will be able to purchase additional amounts
Course Details
Payment:
Minimum numbers apply for courses to run. Payment is due in full at the time of booking, either through the shop, phone or online. All sales are final unless transferring to another class in which a difference in price will be paid. Full refunds will be given if the courses cannot take place. If you cannot make the classes for any reason no refunds will be given, however there may be the option to transfer your booking to an alternative event, please give us a call at Calder Art Supplies 01484 422991.

Refreshments:
Refreshments are available all day (tea, coffee, biscuits etc.) and there will be a lunch break of approximately one hour.
There are plenty of local shops and cafes in the area within close walking distance from the arcade.
Alternatively, you may bring your own lunch.
Disability access:
There is lift access to the studio on the second floor for those with mobility issues. Toilets are located close by on the studio level, however there is a small flight of stairs to access these. Alternatively, there are also toilets located on one level on the ground floor.
Parking:
The nearest car park available to the venue is the multi-storey next to Huddersfield bus station. All details are found on the link below. The cost of the car park is £2.00 for 3 hours (all levels) or £4.00 for 10 hours (upper two levels only). There is a lift access from the multi-storey car park for those with mobility issues.
