About this event

  • 6 hours

This 1-day workshop is the perfect follow-on from the Atmospheric landscapes workshop where you will be introduced to techniques for building rich layers of texture, patterns, marks, and colour to form rich, complex foundations to your paintings.

We will focus on mark making with drawing materials and explore different ways to create textures, patterns and lines using a variety of tools and solvent reduction techniques.

The workshop will include information about techniques, as well as demonstrations and plenty of time for practice. You will be amazed by what you can create in just one day!

What will be covered?

• Introduction to using cold wax medium with oils

• Introduction to the tools

• Working wet-on-wet

• Using transparent and opaque colours to create depth and atmosphere.

• Creating textures and lines using a variety of tools and techniques

• Incorporating pigments and loose powders such as marble dust into your work

• Incorporating pigment sticks and oil bars and other drawing mediums

• Blending techniques

• Building layers of texture and patterns

• Solvent reduction techniques

Do I have the experience?

This is a standalone workshop so there is no need to have attended any previous workshops. So whether you are a professional artist or haven’t picked up a paint brush since school, absolutely no experience of painting or of working in oils needed. Just come prepared to have fun and to experiment.

What shall I bring with me?

All materials and use of tools are covered in the price of the workshop. Please bring your own apron or shirt that you don’t mind getting splashed with paint.

Where is the workshop being held?

The workshop is held at the Craft House in Bingley, West Yorkshire which is also where Paula has her studio. Bingley is easy to get to by road, train and plane and we have lots of people who travel from all over the country to attend one of Paula’s workshops.

There are lots of places to visit within a short distance from Bingley including the World Heritage site, Saltaire where you can see some original David Hockneys; the beautiful village of Haworth, made famous by the Brontes; and the stunning Yorkshire dales with its three peaks and Malham cove.

There’s so much to see and do you’ll want to make a weekend of it!

I’m hooked… what other workshops can I do?

Why not join the 1-day Atmospheric landscapes workshop and learn how to create beautiful landscapes with transparent colours and blending techniques using squeegees, palette knives and brushes.

Alternatively, if you want to immerse yourself in a 3-day workshop then you could progress to the Advanced oil and cold wax workshop where we will experiment with advanced techniques as well as work on creating a series of paintings.

*Please note that some of the materials used during the workshop are not vegan. This includes the paper used throughout the workshop which unfortunately cannot be substituted for another product.

Organised by

The Craft House was established in 2016 in Saltaire by April Chamberlain, who continues to manage the business. Having started in Saltaire, The Craft House is now run from new, larger, premises at 109-111 Main Street, Bingley. We have a lovely ground floor cafe and welcoming workshop spaces on the first floor (reached by stairs with two handrails). We offer a vibrant programme of art, craft and textile workshops and courses for adults, enabling you to develop existing skills as well as try new activities. Working closely with a team of talented artist/maker tutors, we provide expertly-run classes in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. We cater for a range of skill levels, from first-time participants to people with existing skills (including other professional artists and makers looking to develop their techniques). Our emphasis is on encouraging creativity and enjoyment whilst passing on key skills. We also cater for private parties and events - please telephone us or call into the cafe to discuss. Please note that all our events are subject to us achieving minimum booking requirements, as we need to ensure they are commercially viable for our tutors - if we have to cancel an event, we will refund your ticket and give you as much notice as possible.
