Event description

Description

A full day training in how we can use silence and stillness with children and young people in day- day activities and in worship.

We are living in an increasingly busy world, how often when you are asked ‘how are you’’ is your reply ‘I am so busy.' This is the same for many of the children and young people in our churches and communities.

Children and young people’s lives are often full of either nursery, school and then after school clubs, activities to attend and extracurricular lessons.

Many children now have their time filled after school, and on weekends, many children do not experience moments of being quiet, of finding stillness and encountering silence.

One of our roles as children and young people workers is to help children and young people feel comfortable about encountering times of silence and stillness. We often believe that children want lots of noise; many of the services for children are loud, noisy, exciting. There is a place for this; however, how often do we help children to be still, how often do we assist them to embrace the line from Psalm 46:10 ‘Be still and know that I am God.'

Sonia Mainstone-Cotton has over 20 years experience of running participation work for a large children's charity, now a free lance trainer and consultant. Sonia jointly ran the alternative worship community called Sanctuary in Bath for 16 years. As part of this community, Sonia was involved in running all age, participatory services.

She also created and ran Messy space, a family play and creative space at Greenbelt for 4 years. Sonia has developed a number of resources which are sold on proost.co.uk Sonia has recently had a book published with Jessica Kingsley Publishers ‘ Promoting young children’s emotional health and wellbeing'.
