Event description

Description

We sometimes hear that ‘we know more about Mars than the deep ocean’, but is that true?

After millennia of crossing the oceans without knowing what lies beneath, we now have the technology to reach their deepest recesses and what we now know about the dark depths is as remarkable as the unknowns that remain.

As a marine biologist, Dr Jon Copley’s research explores life in the deep ocean that covers most of our world, where he has led expeditions discovering new species of animals (there's a species of sea spider kindly named after him by a colleague!)

An award-winning communicator and contributor to BBC Blue Planet, writer, educator and co-founder of SciConnect, a company that provides training for scientists to share their work with wider audiences.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Copley to deliver this talk via Skype and Screen Share as he shares some of the deep-sea discoveries that have transformed our understanding of our planet, the history of exploring the deep ocean that covers most of it, and how the dark depths are actually connected to our everyday lives.
