About the talk.

For this month's talk we are delighted to welcome one of the keynotes from the ONS Research Excellence Award 2024.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is undertaking a programme of work to quantify the impact of various health conditions and interventions on labour market outcomes, using a new data asset for England that links Census respondents to NHS health records, ONS death registrations, H M Revenue & Customs (HMRC) pay-as-you-earn records and Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) benefit receipts. To date, our analyses have demonstrated that: people from ethnic minority groups and deprived areas were disproportionately more likely to start receiving benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic; people who undergo weight-loss surgery have a sustained improvement in the likelihood of employment up to five years later; talking therapies are effective at helping unemployed people with common mental health disorders re-enter the workforce up to seven years after treatment; and women with endometriosis experience decreased earnings up to five years after the diagnosis. ONS will continue to publish outputs in this area throughout 2025, generating a powerful evidence base with which to inform government policies and spending decisions aiming to increase labour market participation and economic growth.

Meet the presenter.
