Over three days, we’ll put both you and your business through your paces to ensure you’re well-prepared to exploit new market opportunities and compete on the international stage.

Who’s it for?

If you’re a company based in Scotland with a service and you’re interested in growing internationally, then Export Bootcamp is a good place to get started. It’s fully funded and open to all businesses, whatever size or sector, except for intermediaries or suppliers of international trade services.

When and where?

Export Bootcamp will be held at Scottish Enterprise offices in the centre of Edinburgh. You’ll have to attend all dates to complete the Bootcamp.

It’s a 9.15am for 9.30am start, finishing at 4pm:

Scottish Enterprise’s Export Bootcamp is fully funded for Scottish companies and is part-funded through the European Structural and Investment Funds − investing in a smart, sustainable and inclusive future. You should note that this support is a form of state aid, on attendance it will count towards your overall De Minimis allowance.

Day One:

Session 1: Market analysis

  • Why develop international business?
  • Importance of international business planning including starting to prepare for Brexit and the implications
  • Challenges in providing services internationally
  • International market research and selecting target markets
  • Protecting your intellectual property - everything you need to know about managing your intellectual property (IP) when trading overseas − from non-disclosure agreements to patents, trade-marks and copyright

Session 2: Market entry

  • Routes to market and assessing the different options available (direct selling, agents, distributors, online marketplaces)
  • Agency, distribution, licencing and partnership agreements
  • International marketing and sales

Session 3: How to develop your international action plan

There will be an opportunity for 1-2-1 consultations with advisors. All attendees will be helped to prepare an online international action plan to help them to achieve their objectives and understand how this fits into their overall international strategy

Day Two:

Session 1: How to get the most out of International Exhibitions & Visiting the Market

This session will help you maximise your investment on international exhibitions and visiting the market.

  • International Exhibition and Market Visit Research & Preparation – how do you go about research, finding and preparing for international exhibitions and visiting the market – and once there, making sure you make the most out of it.
  • An Elevator Pitch that Gets Results – you need to stand out from the crowd and ensure you get your key messages across to your international audience – the workshop will take you through how you get pitch perfect for your international customers.
  • International Exhibition Marketing – will ensure you are aware of all the marketing and social media tools available and how to use them most effectively to prepare for an international exhibition and visiting the market and get noticed when there

Session 2: How to sell online internationally

  • The opportunity for online sales
  • How to analyse and maximise online international sales via search engine optimisation & social media
  • How to select a model for your international web strategy that is best for your business including online market places
  • Understand the importance of a good website user experience including language and localisation
  • Security including currency considerations
  • Distance Selling Regulations

Session 3: How to develop your international action plan

There will be an opportunity for 1-2-1 consultations with advisors. All attendees will be helped to prepare an online international action plan to help them to achieve their objectives and understand how this fits into their overall international strategy.

Day Three:

Session 1: International finance and contractual issues

  • Checklist for companies with a service selling internationally including planning for Brexit
  • Budgeting and costing
  • International pricing
  • Regulations and taxes (& VAT)
  • Currency and getting paid
  • Contracts and international terms and conditions

Session 2: My international journey

Be inspired by Scotland’s international trade prowess. Hear from a company who’s already been through the experience − sharing tips and insight on trading overseas to grow their business

Session 3: How to finalise your international action plan

There will be an opportunity for 1-2-1 consultations with advisors. All attendees will be helped to prepare an online international action plan to help them to achieve their objectives and understand how this fits into their overall international strategy

Session 4: Trading internationally mentoring session

  • One-to-one sessions with experts to follow up on your international action plan and the next steps for your business.

Areas will include: international trade development, innovation, intellectual assets and international research.
