Export Clinic with British Chilean Chamber of Commerce
With: Marcia Gattoni, Trade & Promotion Manager, British Chilean Chamber.
Chile is the most UK friendly country in South America! It has the highest GDP per capita in the region and is a liberal, open and well-managed market economy, with strong macroeconomic stability due to a solid fiscal responsibility rule, low unemployment and an inflation-targeting Central Bank. It has enjoyed regular periods of steady growth and has long been open to foreign investment, with the UK the 4th largest investor in Chile. It ranks top in competitiveness, innovation and lowest on corruption, meaning easier access for UK firms. The Chilean market’s sophisticated demand for ever more innovation and efficiency makes it a good match for British products & services.
Chile has signed Free Trade Agreements with 64 countries around the world including the EU, so the majority of UK goods can be imported tax-free if they fall under the EUR 1 classification.
Chile is part of the Pacific Alliance, comprising Chile, Mexico, Peru and Colombia - the most prosperous countries in Latin America. Within the Alliance, goods can be moved freely - so access to Chile equals access to the rest of the Pacific Alliance, making Chile a great stepping stone into the rest of the continent and an attractive regional headquarters. It is also an associate member of Mercosur. This network provides access to almost 1.2 billion consumers world-wide.
Chile is the UK's second largest export market in South America after Brazil and is increasingly moving away from being a commodity producing country to a more service focused one, so companies offering optimisation solutions are in high demand. The main UK exports to Chile are currently crude oil, industrial machinery, cars, beverages and pharmaceuticals
Key sectors for the UK are: education, (including online and distance learning and international certification), ICT & smart cities, construction (e.g. energy efficiency and waste management), infrastructure (ports and urban construction), renewable energy, mining (water & energy efficiency and management solutions, environmental consultancy and technology equipment suppliers - mostly cost reduction and productivity gains), retail & luxury goods.
