Event Details

This afternoon is open to all non-clinical staff.

The session will start with a light lunch from 13.00, with the training starting at 13.30.

The afternoon will be led by the NHS Leadership Academy.

In this modern fast paced world building resilience and understanding how our behaviour affects us and impacts on others during times of challenge is key. Prioritising self care practices can act as an antidote to stress, and can build up our defences and ability to navigate our work sustainably, thus building our resilience. Fostering a positive culture within the work environment can support reduction of stress, promote physical and mental wellbeing and encourage building relationships within and across teams.

This half day session is split into two segments: 1) Resilience; 2) Interactions and Relationships – moving from conflict to collaboration; and takes participants through practical techniques and exercises to support building their own resilience and also understanding how their behaviours can make a difference to the environment they work in.

Part 1 - Building resilience: This interactive session takes participants through three techniques, laid out in a passport document. It provides opportunities to pause and reflect. The document also has signposting to further resources which can be accessed after the session.

Learning outcomes:

  • Define resilience
  • Describe the benefits of building and maintaining resilience
  • Take the group through three different techniques to build resilience with a chance to try them out during the session

Part 2 – Interactions and Relationships – moving from conflict to collaboration: This session focuses on understanding how our behaviours and language can influence our interactions, causing or calming conflict in challenging situations. It will equip individuals to recognise their own emotions and those of others, discern between different feelings and adapt their behaviour accordingly, to enable them to get the best from difficult situations and move towards collaboration and a more positive working environment.

Learning outcomes:

  • Consider how  our feelings, emotions and behaviours impact on positive working relationships
  • List the five key elements associated with understanding our emotions and how they can support moving from conflict to collaboration
  • Self-assess your own qualities and values in building relationships and teams against the ‘engaging the team ’ (for managers) or ‘leading with care’ (for non-managers) NHS Health care Leadership Model dimension

Overall the session enables participants to try out the concepts in a safe environment, and leave with tangible actions that they can take away and apply, resulting in a more positive working environment where they can thrive, not just survive.
