God willing, at the Arts Over Borders 2036 and 2038 BECKETT BIENNALES two actors aged 69, will each, for the first time in theatrical history, perform Samuel Beckett’s play Krapp’s Last Tape with the voices of their 39-year-old selves on the recorded tapes, Box 3 Spool 5. Beckett specified that the live actor be 69 whilst the younger recorded self should be 39.
In 2006, Seán Doran (Creative Director, Arts Over Borders) in his sabbatical year after his artistic leadership of the English National Opera (2003-6) invited two actors – the British actor Samuel West in 2006 and the Irish actor Richard Dormer in 2008 – to record the tape parts of the play in BBC studios in London and Belfast. Sam West recorded his tape in his 39th year and Richard Dormer recorded his on the day of his 39th birthday - as specified in the play with the Box 3 Spool 5 label reading ‘A memorable equinox’.
Both actors, upon reaching their 69th year, in 2036 and 2038 respectively, will perform the play in Dublin, Beckett’s home city, on the week of the spring equinox, where Beckett’s memories of his mother’s death in the rest home near Merrion Square and his extraordinary vision on the pier off the Dublin coast were incorporated into the play.
We are of course hoping that Sam and Richard will still be with us in 2036 and 2038!
However, in the unfortunate event of an early death please note there can be no refunds. The tickets will only be valid if each actor reaches his 69th year. This is the risk we are inviting you to take on the purchase of these special theatre tickets.
