Event description

The Eyes for Life Sandpit is a collaborative event co-organised by UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Moorfields Eye Hospital, with the support of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. The aim of the Sandpit is to bring together the - usually - disconnected communities of engineers and ophthalmologists, in a venue that will facilitate the generation of collaborative projects and cross-polination of ideas.

Clinical and engineering experts will present their tools of the trade and discuss how engineering can help solve open challenges in ophthalmology. We have attracted engineers with extensive research programmes, covering areas of robotics, optical imaging, photoacoustics, materials, and data science. Their talks will complement the demonstration of impactful clinical programmes in artificial intelligence, vision regeneration, and diagnosis.

The event will begin with an overview from the UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering Director, followed by a series of clinical and engineering specialist talks. The session will close with a discussion on how innovation and synergy can be created across the different specialisms through strategic cross-disciplinary projects.

This event is the first of a series aiming to support the creation of collaborative projects that capitalise on the clinical and engineering excellence of UCL and Moorfields Eye Hospital. Identified projects are encouraged to put together short proposals that can be developed into full proposals with the help of the Institute of Healthcare Engineering. Our goal is to bootstrap proof-of-concept applications, selected at future events, to further assist with the development of ambitious collaborative projects.

Institute and funding agency speakers:

- Prof. Sebastien Ourselin, Director of UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Wellcome EPSRC Centre on Surgical and Interventional Sciences.

- Dr. Annette Bramley, Head of Healthcare Technologies, EPSRC.

Confirmed clinical speakers:

- Prof. Lyndon da Cruz: robotic vitreoretinal surgery and stem cell delivery.

- Dr. Pearse Keanse: medical retina, artificial intelligence for diagnosis.

- Prof. Sobha Sivaprasad: medical retina, inexpensive diagnosis systems for resource-deprived economies.

Confirmed engineering speakers:

- Dr. Ilias Tachtsidis: near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and imaging.

- Dr. Jorge Cardoso: Big data and deep learning in medical applications.

- Dr. Christos Bergeles: robotic micro-surgery in ophthalmology.

- Dr. John Vardakis: computational modelling of perfused tissue.

- Prof. Paul Beard: photoacoustics and optical coherence tomography.

- Prof. Kwang Choy: advanced materials to combat vision loss.
