Event description

Description

Welcome to our 2018 Annual EYFS Maths Conference on Thursday the 8th February in Plymouth. As always this conference will focus on delivering inspirational maths learning in EYFS. The day will have a strong maths focus as well as linking the learning in maths across the EYFS curriculum.

Our annual EYFS conference provides EYFS teachers and leaders a chance to network, share ideas and take time to hear about successful practice from around the country and beyond.
This conference will include a significant input from Viv Lloyd, the Assistant Director of Early years at the NCETM. The input from Viv will provide us with a great opportunity to hear from the 'horses mouth.' To hear about where EYFS education is heading, as well as having access to the great practice and resources that the national centre has collated.

Main Speaker
Viv Lloyd
Assistant Director for Primary and Early Years
National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics

Viv has had a rich and varied career in Education working across a broad spectrum of schools and the Early Years and Primary phases. Initially Viv worked in a school in challenging circumstances where she developed her own practice and also became part of the Mathematics leading teacher programme which provided the opportunity to work with others and support teacher professional development. Viv then moved into an LA consultancy role. This experience continued to enhance her love and commitment to learning and teaching in mathematics. She worked in this role for a few years; writing and leading local and training events, supporting schools in the locality and working on national materials. Whilst in the consultant role she worked with senior leadership teams to develop whole school provision. Her own professional development continued through study for an MA and the NPQH award. Viv then moved back into school to a deputy headship of a school of 400+ pupils.

Whilst in a leadership role Viv had the opportunity to explore the impact of early education on pupils’ development, this was a development area for the school. This became a focus of her work as she took up an international post as Head of Lower School (3-7). Here Viv had the opportunity to lead a team to ensure that early provision across all areas nurtured and fostered curiosity, promoted a desire to learn and was building firm foundations for future learning.

Viv have always had an interest in evidence based practice and continue to read research and apply new learning to her practice. Viv is fortunate enough to have observed practice in Hungary, South Africa and Canada and to lead a lower school in Houston. Working abroad has enabled Viv to reflect on what works well and to question approaches in terms of their educational impact.

Most recently Viv has set up and led the PGCE Primary Award at Staffordshire University and the PGCE EYTS so she has a keen interest in how ITE programmes equip the teachers of the future across a range of phases. Viv also provided mathematical support in the University’s growing MAT for schools at different points in their development.

Viv has been focused on developing the understanding of Mastery for the last few years through practice, engaging with a local maths hub, becoming the Hub Mastery lead and ongoing research into the pedagogy via the Doctorate that she am undertaking.
