About this event

Welcome!

Please do take a couple of minutes to read the details below as it explains what you can expect from our workshops.

Our NEW Home-Ed Digital Academy is a new blend of digital skills and design skills. Some workshops focus on digital skills without a specific outcome and some focus on design skills aiming towards designing a product which we will make. See the dates and projects listings below for dates of what is happening in each workshop.

Places are very limited so booking is essential. It will not be possible to turn up without a ticket. For this workshop, participants need to be aged 8 to 15yrs. Emergency contact details will be completed during the checkout process.

Please note that we need a minimum of four people to book for the workshop to go ahead. If less than 4 tickets are sold, we will contact you and refund your payment. Participants should be dropped off at the FabLab and collected at the end of the workshop unless you give permission for them to leave without an adult collecting at the end in the checkout process.

About this Workshop:

In our workshops, our Digital Making Tutor, Marcus Brown, will briefly run through how the process works and will give a shirt demonstration pointing out some of the key design techniques needed for the session. Following this, attendees get to develop their own skills or create a design.

Buying additional designs:

Sometimes when people see their design, they decide that they would like to buy more of them. If this applies to you, this is completely possible. Please email and I will quote for the cost and will contact you when it has been made and is ready for collection. Through the summer (which is my busiest period) it might be that the additional copies will be made in September but I will make them sooner if possible. I keep their designs for a year after the workshop date.

Design Making

If the session includes a product to be made, we will make this after the workshop. We will let you know by email when it is ready to be collected or we can send it to another Library in Devon or Torbay for collection.

Workshop Sessions and Focus:

FRI 7 NOV: Learn 2D vector design to create an LED battery tea-light holder. Their design will be laser cut and engraved following the workshop and a batter LED tea-light will be provided.

FRI 14 NOV: Learn how to use Canva and create a design to print onto your own cushion. The cushion will be made following the workshop.

FRI 21 NOV: Create a 3D standing name sign. We will 3D print their sign for them to have following the workshop.

FRI 28 NOV: Create 6 laser-cut Christmas Tree hanging decorations. We will laser cut them following the workshop.

FRI 5 DEC: Create a design in Canva to print onto their own Hoodie. The hoodies are light grey and will be printed in full-colour either on the front or the back.

FRI 12 DEC: Create a 2D vector-based design that we will laser-engrave onto an eco-notebook with a bamboo cover and lined recycled pages. This will be engraved following the workshop. This could make a great gift!

A few things to note:

Refunds - our policy is no refunds. If you are unable to attend, please let us know as we are running a waiting list and, if we can resell your ticket, we will refund your ticket (but not the Eventbrite fee). If we cannot resell your ticket then no refund will be issued. If you are unable to attend then please notify us as soon as possible and then we can 'release your ticket'.

If we have to cancel a workshop for any reason, we will refund you your payment in full.

Late Arrival - It will not be possible to join the workshop if you arrive more than 15 minutes late. By this time, we are getting into the technical content of the workshop and it's not possible to go back over what we have already covered.

Mobile Phones - Mobile phones should not be used in the workshop. It is ok for participants to have a phone with them but they must not be used in the session. If you have any further questions - please do email us at:fablab@librariesunlimited.org.uk

Appropriate Design Content - In some recent workshops I have had to say no to some image and text content attendees have selected. I mention at the start of workshops that the content must be age appropriate and not offensive or illegal. If there are any issues with this I may phone an emergency contact to check if they are happy. All of our internet delivery in the library has a filter running to minimise inappropriate content.

Any questions? If so, please do email me and I will come back to you. I work part-time so it can take 2-3 days to receive a reply sometimes.

Many thanks,

Marcus Brown
