Event description

Description

Faces & Places: on the Outside Looking in presents the selected body of work by four student artists at Wimbledon College of Art: Miro King, Tom Mead, James Prapaithong, and Jay Hur, who are collectively known as “The Corner.” Our culture often takes for granted that a face must be given the immediate attention. Drawn toward the face above all else, our attention creates a necessary hierarchy with uneven distribution of information and stimuli, centered in and around the face. To prioritize and to recognize a face indicates an unspoken knowledge and mystery of the non-face. This binary instructs us, the ones on the outside looking in, to decipher the face that has no name by drawing cultural codes from its background. Without a name, the representative face is morphed into recognizable shape by the pressure of its surroundings. And we, on the outside looking in, feel exactly the same pressure from our environment to behave and act in a manner that matches the impressions from the others, who are looking at us on the outside.
