Event description
A Practitioner Training Course led by Jacinta Kent, held online over 5 weeks from 2 November 2021. Tuesday evenings 7.00 - 8.30p.m.

About this event

This course will equip practitioners with the trauma-informed principles, group analytic theory and practical knowledge needed to prepare, deliver and evaluate an 8-session short-term psychoeducational course for clients who are survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

The course will be led by Jacinta Kent, a group therapist, academic and trainer, whose work centres on childhood sexual abuse, rape and sexual violence. The course is suitable for anyone working with survivors of sexual abuse who would like to learn more about working therapeutically in a group.

Course aims:

To provide practitioners with a basic understanding of:

  • Theory: Trauma-informed principles for practitioners, Trauma and the Social, Trauma and the Unconscious
  • Collaborative assessments for short-term psychoeducational groups
  • Dynamic administration and boundaries
  • Course overview: aims, content, session structure
  • Session activities and handouts for clients
  • Vicarious trauma, support and supervision for practitioners
  • Client feedback and practitioner evaluation.

Benefits for clients:

  • Reducing isolation and feelings of alienation
  • Reducing the shame associated with sexual abuse
  • increasing clients' understanding of how trauma affects the brain, body and behaviours
  • Considering the role of society in managing trauma
  • Recognising the unconscious positions they take up in relationships that may perpetuate unhelpful behaviours
  • Learning techniques that may relieve or help manage the symptoms of PTSD, such as anxiety, flashbacks/nightmares, anger, depression, guilt/shame, low self-esteem and boundary issues.

The current programme relates to the provision of homogenous groups for women with lived experience as women, but could be adapted for men, non-binary, and/or trans people in-house.
