“You know what your problem is, it's that you haven't seen enough movies - all of life's riddles are answered in the movies." - Steve Martin
From Hollywood to Bollywood, from Arthouse to Netflix, there has been a lot of coaching going on in the cinema – although it is hardly ever referred to as such. Meyler Campbell Faculty Member Eyal Pavell would like to take attendees on a journey of coaching in cinema, focusing on a specific film: The King’s Speech (starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter).
The King's Speech is a 2010 British historical drama film directed by Tom Hooper and written by David Seidler. Colin Firth plays the future King George VI who, to cope with a stammer, sees Lionel Logue, an Australian speech and language therapist played by Geoffrey Rush. The men become friends as they work together, and after his brother abdicates the throne, the new king relies on Logue to help him make his first wartime radio broadcast upon Britain's declaration of war on Germany in 1939. Join fellow attendees for a lively discussion about The King’s Speech from a coaching point of view. We will observe, critique, and learn: What can we learn about successful coaching from Jeffrey Rush’s therapy sessions with King George VI? Any skills we can pick up to help us coach royalty or non-royalty?
If you are interested in joining this session, we would ask that you please watch the movie ahead of the session. The King’s Speech is currently available on Netflix and other streaming services.
Eyal Pavell is a faculty member at Meyler Campbell, Psychologist turned consultant to many of the world's most admired companies, and he holds an undergraduate degree in Film Studies.
