FaithCARE Lunchtime Event - Building Restorative Congregations - OXFORD
Tuesday, June 16, 2015 from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM (BST)
FaithCARE - Storytelling Event
Building Restorative Congregations
We offer an opportunity for interested people to hear about how restorative thinking and approaches are being applied to churches where conflict is happening or harm has been done.
What scenarios has FaithCARE worked with? What were the issues? What were the outcomes? What have we learned? Check out the IIRP 'Restorative Works' article for a taster of the evening here
This event is being presented by Bruce Schenk, Director, IIRP Canada. Bruce is a Lutheran pastor and a Founding Member of FaithCARE. Bruce became the Director of IIRP Canada in 2008. He has worked extensively with schools, school boards, churches and in other contexts across Ontario and Canada in restorative practices training and development. Prior to working in educational and other settings, Bruce served in youth and adult justice, including as a policy analyst and chaplain at Brookside Youth Centre since 1988.
Describing the evening Bruce says, "Basically it is an opportunity for interested people to hear about how restorative thinking and approaches are being applied to churches where conflict is happening or harm has been done. A key part of what we do is in the area of education where we work with congregations to create a more restorative community grounded in the Restorative Practice Framework where there is an explicit emphasis on building relationships, utilizing engagement approaches such as circles, and repairing harm as needed."
"So far this work has been limited to Ontario in Canada but would work well everywhere. In fact interest is developing in other parts of Canada and the U.S. in creating a similar program. To date the FaithCARE facilitators have worked with over 60 congregations from a variety of Christian denominations. FaithCARE itself is an ecumenical group involving facilitators from six Christian denominations."
"Much of what I will be doing is sharing stories and experiences to give people a sense of the kind and breadth of the work we do with churches. I am hoping to generate some interest in the potential development of similar work in the UK."
