This session includes the price of one adult ticket to the exhibition 'Heiress: Sargent’s American Portraits.'

Join local artist Mark Mindel for a creative family session at Kenwood House. We recommend you go to the exhibition first, and then walk round the outside of Kenwood House to find us in the historic Old Kitchen (next to the cafe), where you can join us for a family workshop. Here we will invite children and their adults to explore themes of identity, memory, and time through the art of portraiture. Using collage as a playful and accessible medium, participants will create their own portraits of loved ones—friends, family members, or even pets—while learning about the traditions and symbolism of portrait painting.

If you haven't had a chance to see the exhibition before you join us in the Old Kitchen, you will be able to go with the children in your care after you have all created your own work of art together.

John Singer Sargent, one of the most celebrated portraitists of the Gilded Age, captured notable figures from both sides of the Atlantic in oil and charcoal.

In response to the exhibition, Mindel leads this hands-on session for young artists, drawing inspiration from Sargent’s compelling compositions, and some of his more intriguing techniques. At 11am you will be able to create your very own portrait, and at 12 noon you can make a collage of the society Sargent lived in - clothes, hats, jewellery, trains and boats! JOIN US FOR ONE OR BOTH ACTIVITIES!

The session is suitable for families with children aged 3 to 10. All materials will be provided, are included in the price, and should wash out of clothes.

Please note: admission to the exhibition is free to children under 18, and £12 to adults on the door. The Family Portrait Workshop will give ticket holders entry to 'Heiress: Sargent's American Portraits' on 9 August only.

We need to have an idea of numbers of children attending, so once you have booked and paid for your own adult £12 ticket on the Eventbrite booking page, you will be directed to a page where you are asked to let us know how many children you will be bringing. Thank you for helping us by completing this question.

REMEMBER TO CLICK ON 'COMPLETE ORDER' ONCE YOU HAVE ANSWERED THIS QUESTION!

It would also be incredibly helpful if you could email us separately at info@friendsofkenwood.org.uk to confirm (but we understand your busy lives)

Frequently asked questions

Where do I park if I can't get to Kenwood using public transport?

The easiest parking is on Hampstead Lane. You can then enter via East Lodge Gate and walk down the drive. The West Lodge car park has limited spaces(free to members of English Heritage, paid parking for all others). If you are taking public transport, you can reach Kenwood on the 210 and 310 bus.

Can I drop my children off and collect them later?

This is a family workshop and parents/guardians are expected to accompany them at all times.

where do I tell you how many children I am bringing with me?

Once you have paid for your own adult £12 ticket, you will be directed to a page where you are asked to let us know how many children you will be bringing. We need to have a rough idea of numbers, so please do fill in this information! If you have time to email us too, that would be kind. Thank you!

Should I bring my own pencils or other art materials?

No, we are a museum space, so we kindly ask you not to bring your own materials. Materials for collage and drawing will be provided. Also wet wipes to clean hands at the end of the session. Your booking price includes entry for one accompanying adult/guardian to the exhibition on the ground floor
