Event description
Free, online, informal sessions to discuss the wellbeing benefits of nature for people living with dementia and how to overcome any barriers

About this event

We’re offering free, informal sessions for unpaid supporters of people living with dementia. During the sessions we’ll discuss why getting outdoors is essential to the wellbeing of people with dementia, and how to overcome any barriers to getting outdoors. The sessions will give you the knowledge and practical guidance you need to connect to nature confidently.

‘Nature is Calling’ encourages people living with dementia and their supporters to:

  • Understand the health and wellbeing benefits of nature
  • Overcome the mental and physical barriers to accessing the outdoors.
  • Offer practical guidance to build your confidence and plan your outing.

These sessions are online, and have a maximum of 10-12 people, to allow plenty of time for discussion and to ask your questions. One of our experienced trainers will lead the session, share research and resources, and facilitate informal discussion.

You are welcome to book into all 3 sessions or just the one or two that you feel are most relevant to you.

Session 1 - The Wellbeing Benefits of Nature:

  • Research and evidence on the health benefits of connecting to nature and the outdoors.
  • Hearing real-life stories from people living with dementia on how nature has a positive impact on them.
  • Exploring ‘first steps’.
  • Resources to encourage engagement with nature.

Session 2 - Misconceptions and Managing Mental Health:

  • Challenging the common misconceptions about dementia and getting outdoors.
  • Exploring the impact of Covid-19 on the mental health of people living with dementia.
  • Steps to overcome challenges.
  • Resources to support and encourage understanding.

Session 3 - Overcoming Barriers to Getting Outdoors:

  • Understanding the individual.
  • How to motivate others.
  • Things to consider when you go out.
  • Dealing with the ‘what if’s’.
  • Resources to support you to get outside.

Who are these sessions for?

This is suitable for any family member or friend supporting a person living with dementia, who wants to improve confidence in how to get outside and connect with nature, and especially:

  • People diagnosed in the last 18 months.
  • People diagnosed over 18 months ago, who have become less active over the last year and would seek to change that.
  • People who are not active but would like to build that into a new routine.
