Frequently asked questions

Where is the fossil hunt held?

The fossil hunt is at Cross Hands Quarry, about 5 miles from Moreton-in-Marsh in South Warwickshire.

Can I bring younger children?

Due to the nature of the site, we do not recommend this event for children under the age of 7. All children must be supervised.

What do I need to bring?

We will provide tools, safety goggles and specimen bags for the fossil hunt. Please bring a packed lunch and suitable clothing for the weather. You are also welcome to bring a camera.

What should I wear?

The fossil hunt takes place outside at an exposed site, so please dress suitably for the weather. We recommend you wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes and bring a raincoat, sun hat and sun cream.

What if it rains?

This is an outdoor event and will only be cancelled in the event of an extreme weather forecast. Please dress appropriately for the weather.

Is there a café on site?

No, please bring a packed lunch. Please note that there are no indoor lunch facilities.

Is there a toilet at the quarry?

Yes, there is a toilet available to use on site.

Will I find a dinosaur fossil?

Cross Hands Quarry is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is rich in fossils from the Jurassic period. During this period, Warwickshire was under a shallow sea, so we can't promise a dinosaur but everyone will find a fossil!

Is the site accessible for those with limited mobility?

The ground at the quarry is uneven and the event will involve walking/climbing up spoil heaps, so we do not recommend it for those with limited mobility.
